Night Shift

Writer's picture: Angelo LorenzoAngelo Lorenzo

This flash fiction piece was first released in 2016.

On the night of his shift, a security guard making rounds on a private cemetery hours after the people left made sure the vicinity was clear - as was his usual duty.

While roaming, he saw a lone man standing over one headstone.

With an intention to inquire what the man was doing and to inform him that the cemetery was officially off limits to visitors at this hour, he approached him and said, “Sir, visiting hours is over. You can come back tomorrow.”

As he prepared to assist the man out of the place, the man raised his head from the headstone, but without looking at him, said, “I’m only admiring my name from this view. Do you mean I’m not allowed to be where I now reside?”

The security guard lifted his flashlight with a tremulous hand. When the beam caught the man’s head, the man finally faced him.

What he saw was a lopsided grin as pale as the headstone’s polished marble beneath black hollow holes that had once contained the man’s sight.
